As of 2025, Instagram has emerged as the most utilized social media platform in India, boasting a user penetration rate of 74.70% among internet users. This translates to approximately 516.92 million active users, reflecting the platform’s significant reach and influence in the country. The surge in Instagram’s popularity can be attributed to its visual-centric content, user-friendly interface, and the growing trend of short-form video content, which resonates particularly well with the younger demographic. The platform’s integration of features like Reels and Stories has further enhanced user engagement, making it a preferred choice for both content creators and consumers.
Following closely is Facebook, with a user penetration rate of 71.20%, amounting to around 492.70 million active users. Despite the emergence of newer platforms, Facebook maintains a strong foothold in India, especially among older age groups and rural populations. Its comprehensive features, including groups, marketplaces, and community pages, continue to facilitate connections and information sharing across diverse user segments. Other notable platforms include X (formerly Twitter) with a 42.90% penetration rate, LinkedIn at 35.70%, and Pinterest at 29%, each catering to specific user interests and professional networking needs.
The widespread adoption of social media in India is further evidenced by the country’s substantial internet user base, which stands at approximately 692 million, representing 48.7% of the total population. Of these, a significant portion accesses the internet via mobile devices, with 627 million mobile internet users reported. This mobile-first approach underscores the importance of optimizing content for smartphones and highlights the role of affordable data plans and smartphones in driving digital connectivity. On average, Indians spend about 2 hours and 50 minutes daily on social media platforms, indicating the integral role these platforms play in daily life, from entertainment and news consumption to social interaction and e-commerce.
